Recently, the Diaoyu Islands he eclipsed everything. Japan’s “purchase” of the Diaoyu Islands has infuriated many Chinese people. Many found the need to express their anger and frustrations. Some cities in China saw mounting wes of protests. Yes, I completely agree that we he every right to make our voice heard, but this should be done in a rational way. The fact is that things are getting a little out of control. A few people’s behiors like ashing Japanese branded cars do nothing but breach laws and create unnecessary social chaos, which might be taken advantage of by opportunistic people with ulterior motives. So let’s display our rational patrioti. Despite all the current frictions and disputes between China and Japan, I think the two countries can still work as partners. After all, peace is in the interest of all countries. Shi Li

I he been reading China Today regularly for many years. In this year’s February issue I was pleased to read that Polish President Bronisl Komorowski had visited China last December and that Chinese President Hu Jintao had signed a joint statement extending bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership. It is a piece of very important news and, as I know, a lot of Polish youths and even adults he been learning Chinese language. Poland has very good relations with China in the fields of economy, trade, culture and science. Lately I had the honor of celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. I was invited to a reception at the embassy by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Poland, H.E. Mr. Xu Jian. During the reception the guests had the chance to take home some issues of China Today, and after reading them through论文导读:countrythesuiciderateforwomenishalfthatformen.Followingseveralrecentextremeincidents,moreandmorepeoplearebeginningtoshowtheirconcernforlivesofthoseknownas“left-behind”ruralwomen.Ofcourse,suicideisstillrare,butmoreandmoremediareportsandinvestigatio

Did you know that China is the only country in the world where there are more female suicides than male? Or at least this was the case in the 1990s. The difference doesn’t look huge, but it’s shocking when you compare it to the rest of WHO’s statistics – in almost every other country the suicide rate for women is half that for men.
Following several recent extreme incidents, more and more people are beginning to show their concern for lives of those known as “left-behind” rural women. Of course, suicide is still rare, but more and more media reports and investigations are exposing the woes of this group of women: crushing house chores and farming work, financial stress and perpetual solitude. Considering the huge population of them, roughly 50 million nationwide, and the accompanying social problems, I think our government should extend more concern and care to the group. Most “left-behind” women live in undeveloped areas, so creating closeto-home factory jobs to existing surplus rural labor or guiding them to cultivate cash crops to increase theproceeds of their farming work should top the agenda of local governments. Local women’s federations should also devise programs that open new sources of income for rural women and meanwhile help them he more contact with each other. As China advances its rural-urban integration, which will involve equal education opportunities and universal healthcare among other improvements to public welfare, I hope that “left-behind” women is only a temporary social phenomenon and the phrase will soon fall into disuse.
