Abstract：The Old Man and the Sea is the novel written by Ernest Hemingway. And it is a famous work of him. In this novel， the author shapes a image of“a dauntless man”who still keeps his grace manners even if failing. And which subject mainly praise the dauntless struggling spirit. Santiago is an image of “bre hero”. This article mainly analyzes the character of Santiago from the following aspects： Facing bad luck， Santiago dealt with it with hardworking and never give up； Santiago is a man full of challenge spirit and competitive sense； Santiago is hero and failure. This kind of breness deserves us to study especially when we lived in this society which full of death and violence.

1.The Brief Introduction of Santiago

Santiago is an aged Cuban man， a skilled fisherman by profession. By personality， Santiago is bre， determined， and optimistic， not letting anything in life rattle him. Even when he does not catch a single fish for eighty-four days， he refuses to be discouraged. He has had streaks of bad luck in the past， and he is hopeful that the next day will bring him better luck. In fact， he makes up his mind to go far out to sea and try his luck， optimistic that he may catch a really large fish.
2.A Detailed Analysis of the Character of Santiago

2.1 Hardworking and Never Give up

The hero of "the old man and the sea" Santiago is the most typical "butch" image that "a man can be destroyed but not defeated". Years of hard life in fishing carved him an image of the sea， created his “dauntless man " character. Santiago's most significant character is that he is a man full of challenging spirit and competitive sense. Each time when he goes fishing， to survive is not his single purpose； what’s more is challenge to battle to the sea. He couldn't catch a fish for 84 days， it is a sting that the sea gives him and it is also a test that the sea gives him. "The old man and the sea" reveals an ancient and grand literary theme---the relationship between man and the nature and the challenge of people against the fate， reflects a dauntless attitude of life and dare to fight with the bad luck. Works reflects the failure see from the surface， but it implied the tough guy temperament that doesn’t bow to the failure. Failure is everyone inevitably to taste during the life journey， but the failure after fighting prompts people much respect than those who achieve success easily. "The old man and the sea" not simply tells us a story about old man struggle against the sharks， what's more is a philosophy of life about how to struggle with adversity and how to be a hero of life.
